Large van

Renault Master

The Renault Master is Renault's large van and sits in the segment above the Trafic. The model is intended for transporting large or tall loads and in the Netherlands is widely used by construction and installation companies, courier and parcel services, rental companies and motorhome and body builders. Besides the closed panel van, the Master is available as a chassis cab, box truck, tipper and double cab, which is why many examples are on the road with a third-party conversion. The third generation (2010-2024) comes with front-wheel drive and, for the heavier weight classes, with rear-wheel drive and twin rear wheels. Since 2024 the fourth generation has been available, with 2.0-litre Blue dCi diesels and an E-Tech version with two battery sizes.

Master III (2010-2024, incl. the 2014 and 2019 facelifts) - front-wheel drive (2010-2024)

Completely new generation in 2010 with the 2.3 dCi (M9T) in place of the old 2.5 dCi. The 2014 facelift brought the Energy engines with stop-start and twin-turbo technology, followed by Euro 6 with AdBlue/SCR from 2016. The 2019 facelift brought a new front end, more driver assistance systems and a Euro 6d engine range of 135, 150 and 180 hp.

Master Z.E. / E-Tech electric (generation III, 2018-2024) (2018-2024)

Available from 2018 as the Master Z.E. with a 33 kWh battery and a 57 kW electric motor, aimed at urban and distribution traffic. In 2022 the model was renamed Master E-Tech electric and was given a 52 kWh battery with a longer range; the body dimensions remained the same as the diesel versions, while the payload is lower because of the battery pack.

The dimensions at a glance

Of the Renault Master there are 19 versions, load length 258 cm to 449 cm, load volume 7,8 m³ to 17,0 m³. The full dimensions table by version, with wheelbase, exterior dimensions, width between the wheel arches and Euro pallets, is on the dimensions page.

What the Master is known for

  • Load volume of approximately 8 to 17 m3 and a payload that, depending on the version, goes up to over 2,000 kg on the rear-wheel-drive versions
  • Both front-wheel drive (low load floor) and rear-wheel drive with single or twin rear wheels for heavier GVWs up to 4.5 tonnes
  • Wide range of factory chassis and platform variants, which is why the model is often used as a base for conversions and motorhomes
  • Available with fully electric drive since 2018 (Master Z.E./E-Tech), with an 87 kWh battery since 2024
  • Dense dealer and service network for commercial vehicles in the Netherlands and wide availability of parts through sharing with the Opel Movano and Nissan NV400/Interstar

What to look out for on a used example

  • The 2.3 dCi (engine code M9T) is known for fouling and sticking of the EGR valve and for wear of the variable-geometry turbo and the injectors; look out for loss of power, soot emissions and an illuminated engine warning light.
  • The M9T has a timing chain, not a belt; listen for rattling on a cold start. Renault generally uses a service interval of 40,000 km or two years for this engine (shorter with heavy use).
  • At high mileages, check the gearbox and clutch (whining noise, difficult shifting) and the rails, rollers and hinges of the sliding door and rear doors; on vans that are constantly fully laden, brakes and rear suspension wear faster.
  • Euro 6 diesels need a working AdBlue/SCR system with no fault messages; on the electric versions, battery health, charging history and the supplied charging cables are the main points to check.

These points apply to the model in general. What applies to a specific vehicle depends on its maintenance history; we discuss this for every vehicle we sell.
