Caddy, Transporter or Crafter: which size suits your work?

Within its commercial vehicle range, Volkswagen offers a clear build-up in size. The Caddy is the smallest: compact, agile and ideal for couriers and installers who mainly drive in the city, with a payload of up to approximately 750 kilos (the Caddy Maxi has a longer load compartment and slightly more capacity). The Transporter is the well-known mid-size model and the brand's most popular van: available in several lengths and roof types, with a payload of over 1,400 kilos, suitable for installers, construction workers and couriers. If you need more volume or weight, the Crafter is the logical next step: up to 5 tonnes of payload, also available as a box van or with a double cab, suitable for logistics and heavier transport. If you're unsure between two models, focus mainly on your daily load: buying too small will cost you more later than opting for a size up.

What to watch out for when buying a used Volkswagen commercial vehicle?

With a used Transporter or Crafter fitted with a TDI engine, it's wise to check the maintenance history, particularly of the timing belt or chain and the soot filter and AdBlue system: neglected maintenance here can quickly lead to costly repairs. On the Caddy and Transporter, also check the sliding door rails and the load floor, which can show wear or moisture damage under intensive use. A DSG automatic transmission drives comfortably but requires timely oil changes, so ask for the service booklet. Also look at the mileage in relation to the vehicle's age: a van that has mainly done short city trips wears differently from one with a lot of motorway kilometres.
