Financial lease or purchase: what suits your business

With financial lease, the box truck is registered in your company's name and you start building equity in the vehicle from day one, while the costs are spread over fixed monthly instalments. This is attractive if you'd rather put your working capital toward stock, staff or growth than into a one-off purchase. Financial lease is also possible up to 100% of the value, even if you've just started out or work as a freelancer and can't yet show a long business history. With or without a tail lift: choose based on your cargo

A box truck with a tail lift is essential as soon as you need to load and unload heavier pallets, furniture or machinery on your own, since the lift does the work instead of you lifting by hand. If you mainly transport light boxes or crates and always have access to a loading dock or forklift at the drop-off point, a version without a tail lift may suffice, saving you on purchase and maintenance costs. For a furniture box truck, pay attention to the interior height and the number of tie-down points, and for pallet box trucks, check the exact loading width between the wheel arches. Also check whether the tail lift is hydraulic or mechanical and ask about the maximum lifting capacity, as this varies greatly between versions and determines whether your heaviest cargo can be moved safely.

Driving licence, weight class and daily use

Most used box trucks up to 3,500 kg can be driven with a standard category B driving licence, making them attractive for freelancers and smaller businesses without drivers holding a category C licence. If you need more load capacity, you'll quickly move into the class above 3,500 kg, which requires a category C licence and code 95; always check this before selecting a box truck. When viewing a used vehicle, check the registration and ownership details, the condition of the load floor and side panels, and whether recent maintenance has been carried out on the coupling between cab and body. An automatic drives more comfortably in city traffic with frequent stops, while a manual box truck is generally slightly more fuel-efficient on longer trips.
