Pick-up, off-road vehicle or 4x4 van: what suits your work?

A pick-up with an open load bed is the most practical 4x4 for construction, agriculture and landscaping: you can easily load machinery, sand or pallets and hose the bed down afterwards. An off-road vehicle is more comfortable on the road and suitable if you mainly transport people and light equipment or need to tow heavy loads. A genuine 4x4 van is rarer and more expensive to purchase; a pick-up with a double cab and hardtop is often a smarter alternative with comparable load and seating capacity. So first determine what matters most: an open load bed, towing capacity, seating, or an enclosed load space.

Single cab or double cab?

A double cab offers four to five full-size seats and is ideal for crews travelling together to the job site. The downside: the load bed is shorter, usually around one and a half metres. A single cab, on the other hand, provides a longer bed for ladders, pipes and machinery, but limits the number of occupants to two or three. If you regularly transport both staff and materials, choose a double cab and compensate for the shorter bed with a trailer; most 4x4 pick-ups can tow between 3,000 and 3,500 kg braked.

What should you check when buying a used 4x4 pick-up?

When buying a second-hand pick-up, always check the maintenance history and test whether the 4x4 system demonstrably works: engage the four-wheel drive and any low-range gearing during the test drive. Look underneath the vehicle for rust and damage to the chassis, transfer case and drive shafts, signs of intensive off-road use. Also check the towing capacity and payload on the registration document, the condition of the tyres and brakes, and the emissions class if you regularly need to enter city centres.
