First check the payload on the registration certificate: the body and any tail lift take a substantial chunk out of the number of kilos you're actually allowed to carry. Next, measure the interior dimensions of the load box and compare them with your cargo — pallets, roll containers or furniture each require different dimensions. Also look at the maintenance history, the mileage relative to the year of manufacture, and the condition of the load floor, doors and seals. If you regularly drive into cities, check whether the emission standard fits the low-emission and zero-emission zones on your routes. Finally, ask when the tail lift was last inspected and serviced; repairs to it can be costly.
Box truck 3.5 tonnes or heavier: driving licence and payload
A box truck with a gross weight of up to 3,500 kg can be driven on a standard B driving licence and falls outside the truck regime: no tachograph and no code 95 required. The trade-off is a limited payload — on a 3.5-tonne truck with a large body and tail lift, sometimes less than 1,000 kg remains. If you regularly transport heavy loads, a heavier box truck is a wiser choice, but for that you'll need a C1 licence (up to 7,500 kg) or a C licence. So weigh up your average load, factor in the weight of racking and tools, and choose accordingly: a structurally overloaded box truck leads to fines and extra wear.
Tail lift, side door or furniture body?
A tail lift is almost indispensable when loading pallets or heavy goods at locations without a forklift or loading dock, but it typically weighs 250 to 350 kg on its own and requires periodic maintenance. If you mainly transport light, bulky volume — furniture, moving boxes, parcels — a furniture body with a lowered chassis and large load volume often proves more useful than a tail lift. A side door is valuable for urban distribution: you can simply unload from the side when the rear is blocked. Before buying, think about how you load and unload on a daily basis; that determines which configuration will pay for itself fastest.
Buy a box truck or financial lease?
If you buy the box truck outright, you become the owner immediately and have no monthly payments, but you do tie up working capital.
