Which tail lift suits your cargo?
Tail lifts vary greatly in type and lifting capacity. A cantilever lift (also called a folding lift) is lighter, puts less weight on the front axle, and is suitable for up to around 500 kg per lift, ideal for parcels and smaller pallets. A double-scissor hydraulic lift can handle heavier loads, often between 750 and 1,500 kg, and is the standard choice for furniture transport and full euro pallets (around 300 to 600 kg per pallet). When buying, check the maximum lifting capacity against your heaviest load, and verify whether the lift folds away under the load floor (no loss of loading length) or stays hanging behind it (loading length is reduced).
Payload and driving licence: do the math
A tail lift itself easily weighs 100 to 250 kg, and that comes directly off your payload. Many box trucks on a 3,500 kg chassis therefore come close to the limit for a category B driving licence once the lift, ramps and a full load are factored in. Always ask for the gross vehicle weight (GVW) and the current payload, not just the unladen weight. If you want to drive heavier loads on a regular basis, you'll need a BE combination or a category C licence. Also check the interior dimensions: for two rows of euro pallets (120 x 80 cm) side by side, you need a loading width of at least around 2.40 metres.
Checking maintenance and wear on the tail lift
The tail lift is a separate mechanical system alongside the engine and isn't automatically covered by regular servicing. When buying a used box truck, check for oil leaks at the hydraulic cylinders, whether the hinges and platform show signs of corrosion (common due to road salt and outdoor use), and whether the rubber buffers and stops are still intact. Ask for the maintenance log and, ideally, test the lift a few times under load, going up and down: it should move smoothly, without jerking or delay, and the controls (cable or remote) should respond immediately.
Buying or Financial Lease for your box truck with tail lift
If you buy with your own money, you pay no interest and become full owner immediately, but it ties up a large amount of capital in one go. Financial Lease spreads the purchase over a term of up to 72 months, with you as the owner from day one, and the interest is often tax-deductible as a business expense. This makes leasing attractive for start-ups and self-employed entrepreneurs who prefer to keep their working capital free for stock, staff or unexpected costs. Do you have a current company vehicle? Trade-ins are taken into account as standard at Tatev Auto and directly reduce the amount to be financed.

What is the difference between a cantilever lift and a double-scissor tail lift?
A cantilever lift is lighter and suitable for up to around 500 kg, ideal for parcels. A double-scissor hydraulic lift can handle 750 to 1,500 kg and is better suited to full euro pallets and furniture transport.
How much lifting capacity does a tail lift need for a euro pallet?
A full euro pallet weighs on average 300 to 600 kg. Choose a tail lift with a minimum lifting capacity of 750 kg if you regularly transport full pallets, so you stay comfortably within the margin.
Can I drive a box truck with tail lift on my category B licence?
Yes, as long as the gross vehicle weight (GVW) of the vehicle doesn't exceed 3,500 kg. Note: the lift itself easily weighs 100 to 250 kg, so always check the actual payload after fitting.
Is a box truck with tail lift more expensive to maintain than one without?
The lift is a separate hydraulic system with its own wear on cylinders, hinges and rubbers. The extra cost is limited if the system is well maintained, but always check this separately from the regular APK (MOT/TÜV).
How much does a used box truck with tail lift cost at Tatev Auto?
We currently have 54 box trucks with tail lift in stock, starting from €10,900 excl. VAT. Every unit has a valid APK (MOT/TÜV) and is delivered ready to drive.
