Mercedes-Benz Sprinter
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a large van that has been built since 1995 and in the Netherlands is mainly used by installation and construction companies, parcel services, rental companies and motorhome builders. The model is available as a closed panel van, chassis cab, dropside, double cab and minibus, with a gross vehicle weight of approximately 3.0 to 5.5 tonnes. From the third generation (2018), front-wheel drive has been available alongside rear-wheel drive and 4x4, which gives a lower load floor. Since 2019 there has been a fully electric eSprinter, which received a new generation with larger batteries in 2023. Thanks to its high production numbers and conversion-friendly chassis variants, the Sprinter is one of the most widely used large vans on the Dutch market.
Sprinter II (W906) (2006-2018)
The second generation gained a new front end, a larger model range up to 5 tonnes and more load volume than the first Sprinter. In 2009 the 2.1-litre OM651 replaced the older OM646 diesels and all engines became Euro 5. The 2013 facelift brought a new front end, extra assistance systems and the more economical ECO Gear six-speed gearbox; from 2016 Mercedes-Benz supplied Euro 6 engines with AdBlue.

Sprinter III (W907/W910, VS30) (2018-present)
Alongside rear-wheel drive and 4x4, the third generation also gained front-wheel drive with a lower load floor, a new dashboard with MBUX touchscreen and more driver assistance systems. The 2.1-litre OM651 (114, 143 and 163 hp) and the 3.0-litre V6 with 190 hp were replaced from 2021-2023 by the 2.0-litre OM654 in four power levels (84, 110, 125 and 140 kW), paired with a six-speed manual or the 9G-TRONIC automatic. The gross vehicle weight goes up to 5.5 tonnes.

The dimensions at a glance
Of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter there are 18 versions, load length 260 cm to 471 cm, load volume 7,5 m³ to 17,0 m³. The full dimensions table by version, with wheelbase, exterior dimensions, width between the wheel arches and Euro pallets, is on the dimensions page.
What the Sprinter is known for
- Wide range: L1 to L4, H1 to H3 and 7.8 to 17 m3 load volume
- Gross vehicle weight of approximately 3.0 to 5.5 tonnes, with payload up to over 2,500 kg on the heavy chassis variants
- Choice of front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and 4x4 within the same generation (from 2018)
- Widely used as a base for conversions (box body, refrigeration, motorhome) thanks to the extensive chassis programme
- Dense dealer and service network for commercial vehicles in the Netherlands
What to look out for on a used example
- The 2.1 four-cylinder (OM651) has a timing chain; on examples from around 2007-2015 chain stretch is a known point of attention, audible as rattling on a cold start.
- Check the operation of the sliding door and sliding door rails, the closing of the rear doors and the hinges; in intensive delivery work these wear fastest.
- On Euro 5/Euro 6 diesels, check the condition of the particulate filter, EGR and (on Euro 6) the AdBlue system, especially on vehicles with many short trips.
- Check the panelwork around the wheel arches, sills and poorly repaired damage; on the W906, rust mainly develops in places where damage was previously repaired.
These points apply to the model in general. What applies to a specific vehicle depends on its maintenance history; we discuss this for every vehicle we sell.
