Medium-sized van

Renault Trafic

The Renault Trafic is a medium-sized front-wheel-drive van, intended for businesses that load and unload in and around the city every day. The model is supplied in two lengths (L1 and L2) and two roof heights (H1 and H2), alongside variants such as the double cab, the chassis cab and the Combi and Spaceclass passenger versions. Renault has built the Trafic at the Sandouville factory since 2014 and also supplies it under the names Opel/Vauxhall Vivaro, Nissan NV300/Primastar and Fiat Talento, which makes the availability of parts and workshop expertise in the Netherlands wide. Users are mainly installers, construction and maintenance companies, couriers and service providers; in addition, many examples run as taxis or minibuses. Since 2022 there has also been a fully electric version alongside the diesels, the Trafic E-Tech.

Trafic III (2014-2021) (2014-2021)

Completely new generation with front-wheel drive and a new 1.6 dCi unit in place of the previous generation's 2.0 dCi, with TwinTurbo versions for the first time. At the end of 2016 the Euro 6 update followed (dCi 95/120 and Energy dCi 125/145 TwinTurbo). In 2019 a major technical update arrived: the 1.6 dCi was replaced by a 2.0 dCi with 120, 145 or 170 hp, with an EDC automatic for the first time.

The dimensions at a glance

Of the Renault Trafic there are 13 versions, load length 187 cm to 294 cm, load volume 3,3 m³ to 8,9 m³. The full dimensions table by version, with wheelbase, exterior dimensions, width between the wheel arches and Euro pallets, is on the dimensions page.

What the Trafic is known for

  • Load floor 1,662 mm wide with 1,268 mm between the wheel arches, so three Euro pallets fit crossways in every version
  • Payload of approximately 1,000 to 1,200 kg, depending on version and weight class (T27/T29/T30)
  • Load-through hatch under the passenger bench, which extends the load length to 3,750 mm (L1) or 4,150 mm (L2)
  • Shared platform with the Opel Vivaro, Nissan NV300/Primastar and Fiat Talento; wide availability of parts and a dense Renault network in the Netherlands
  • 2.0 dCi with 380 Nm of torque and 2,500 kg braked towing capacity in the heavier versions

What to look out for on a used example

  • With many short trips the particulate filter and EGR of the 1.6 dCi and 2.0 dCi can become clogged; ask about regeneration messages and, on Euro 6 diesels, about AdBlue consumption and any fault messages.
  • Check the sliding door: the rails, rollers and lock wear with intensive loading and unloading, and a sagging door indicates worn guides.
  • The 1.6 dCi (R9M) and 2.0 dCi (M9R) have a timing chain instead of a belt; listen for rattling noises on a cold start and ask about the oil change schedule.
  • With the EDC automatic (2019-2024) and the EAG9 (from 2024) it is sensible to assess the gear changes at low speed and request the maintenance history.

These points apply to the model in general. What applies to a specific vehicle depends on its maintenance history; we discuss this for every vehicle we sell.

Compare the Trafic with another model

Only models of the same size, so the comparison is fair.
