Medium-sized van

Ford Transit Custom

The Ford Transit Custom is Ford's medium-sized van, positioned between the compact Transit Connect and the heavy Transit. The model appeared in 2012 and in the Netherlands is mainly used by installers, construction and service companies, couriers and municipal services. There are closed panel van versions, double cabs and passenger versions (Tourneo Custom, also supplied as the Kombi in the Netherlands). Since the second generation of 2023 the model has been available as a plug-in hybrid and fully electric (E-Transit Custom) alongside diesel. The sizes run from L1H1 to L2H2, with load volumes of approximately 3.3 to 8.3 m3.

Transit Custom (first generation, incl. the 2018 facelift) (2012-2023)

Introduced in 2012 with the 2.2 TDCi Duratorq (Euro 5). From autumn 2016 the 2.0 EcoBlue (Euro 6) replaced this engine, with a 6-speed automatic for the first time. The 2018 facelift brought a new interior and dashboard, and from late 2019 a 185 hp top version, a 48V mild hybrid (EcoBlue Hybrid) and a plug-in hybrid with a 1.0 EcoBoost range extender were added.

The dimensions at a glance

Of the Ford Transit Custom there are 12 versions, load length 158 cm to 300 cm, load volume 3,3 m³ to 8,3 m³. The full dimensions table by version, with wheelbase, exterior dimensions, width between the wheel arches and Euro pallets, is on the dimensions page.

What the Transit Custom is known for

  • Payload up to approximately 1,400 kg and load volume up to 8.3 m3, depending on version and GVW
  • Three drivetrains within one body: diesel, plug-in hybrid and fully electric (second generation)
  • Towing capacity up to 2,500 kg (first generation) and up to 2,800 kg (second generation diesel)
  • Dense dealer and service network in the Netherlands and a good supply of parts
  • Large supply on the Dutch used market, so versions are easy to compare

What to look out for on a used example

  • The 2.0 EcoBlue diesel has a timing belt that runs in the engine oil; Ford shortened the interval to around 160,000 km or 6 years, and with many short trips it is often replaced earlier. Ask for documented maintenance with the prescribed oil.
  • Check the particulate filter and EGR history: a lot of city driving and short idling lead to more frequent regeneration; fault codes or incomplete regenerations can be seen by reading out the system.
  • Check the sliding door rails, door hinges and load floor fittings for wear and play; on vans with many stops this is a normal wear point.
  • With the automatic (6-speed in the first generation, 8-speed in the second): look out for jerking or delay when engaging from P or R, and ask about the transmission oil change interval.

These points apply to the model in general. What applies to a specific vehicle depends on its maintenance history; we discuss this for every vehicle we sell.
