Large van

Fiat Ducato

The Fiat Ducato is the large van from Fiat Professional and has been supplied since 2006 in the current, repeatedly updated third generation. The model is available as a closed panel van, window van, double cab and as a chassis cab for conversions, with gross vehicle weights from 2.8 to 4.25 tonnes. In the Netherlands the Ducato is mainly used by construction and installation companies, courier and removal services, service companies and motorhome builders; the model forms the base of a large proportion of European motorhomes. Alongside diesel there has been a fully electric E-Ducato since 2021, which was given a larger battery pack from 2024. The Ducato shares its engineering with the Peugeot Boxer, Citroen Jumper and Opel Movano (2021-2024), which makes the range of parts and bodywork options wide.

Ducato III (X250/X290, incl. the 2014 and 2021 facelifts) (2006-present)

The third generation arrived in 2006 (X250) and received the X290 facelift in 2014 with a new front end, new interior and more economical MultiJet II engines. In 2019 (model year 2020) a Euro 6d range of 2.3 MultiJet2 engines with AdBlue replaced the older units and the 9-speed automatic appeared in place of the Comfort-Matic. With the 2021 facelift came the new 2.2 Multijet3 engines (2,184 cc), a larger Uconnect screen and more driver assistance systems; the 2024 Series 2 has Euro 6e engines and an 8-speed automatic.

E-Ducato (fully electric) (2021-present)

The E-Ducato appeared in 2021 with a 90 kW motor and a choice of 47 or 79 kWh battery. With the 2024 Series 2, the electric Ducato was given a completely new drivetrain with 200 kW, a 110 kWh battery, rapid charging up to 150 kW and three driving modes (Eco, Normal, Power). The load area and body variants are the same as on the diesel versions; the vehicle stands a few centimetres higher because of the battery pack.

The dimensions at a glance

Of the Fiat Ducato there are 18 versions, load length 267 cm to 505 cm, load volume 8,0 m³ to 17,0 m³. The full dimensions table by version, with wheelbase, exterior dimensions, width between the wheel arches and Euro pallets, is on the dimensions page.

What the Ducato is known for

  • Load volume of 8 to 17 m3 and a payload that, depending on the version, goes up to over 2,000 kg
  • Fixed load width of 1,870 mm and 1,422 mm between the wheel arches, so Euro pallets fit crossways
  • Wide range: panel van, window van, double cab, chassis cab and pick-up, with wheelbases from 3,000 to 4,035 mm
  • Widely used base for conversions and motorhome building, with an extensive range of bodybuilders and parts
  • Large dealer and service network in the Netherlands through Fiat Professional and the shared Stellantis engineering

What to look out for on a used example

  • Timing belt: depending on model year and engine version, the factory schedule for the 2.2 and 2.3 MultiJet runs from approximately 180,000 to 240,000 km or 4 to 5 years; ask for proof of replacement, especially with low mileage and high age.
  • Particulate filter and EGR: examples that have mainly done short trips and city work can suffer from clogging; check that regeneration completes and whether fault messages are stored in the memory.
  • From model year 2020 all diesels have AdBlue (tank approximately 15-19 litres); check the operation of the dosing pump and the level sensor system.
  • Check the sliding door rails, door hinges and locks for play, and on older examples look for corrosion around the wheel arches, sills and the bottom of the rear doors.

These points apply to the model in general. What applies to a specific vehicle depends on its maintenance history; we discuss this for every vehicle we sell.
