Toyota Hilux
The Toyota Hilux is a pick-up with a ladder frame chassis, rear leaf springs and selectable four-wheel drive with a reduction gearbox, built for work where loading, towing and unpaved terrain come together. In the Netherlands it is supplied as the Xtra Cab (2+2) and Double Cab, as a grey-registration commercial vehicle with two seats or as a five-seater with passenger-car BPM; the Single Cab was mainly available until 2020. The Hilux is used by contractors, landscapers, agricultural businesses, nature managers and businesses that tow a trailer of up to 3,500 kg. Since the late-2020 facelift a 2.8 D-4D with 204 hp has been available alongside the 2.4 D-4D, from 2024 also as a 48V mild hybrid, and a fully electric version follows in 2026.
Hilux eighth generation (AN120/AN130), incl. the 2020 and 2024 facelifts (2016-present)
New generation in 2016 with a 2.4 D-4D (150 hp) instead of the earlier 2.5 and 3.0 D-4D, a stiffer chassis and a more modern cab. The facelift at the end of 2020 brought the 2.8 D-4D (204 hp), a new front end and Toyota Safety Sense; from 2024 the 2.8 is also available as a 48V mild hybrid. In 2026 Toyota is introducing the next Hilux, as a Hybrid 48V and fully electric (BEV).

What the Hilux is known for
- Braked towing capacity of 3,500 kg on the diesel versions
- Payload of approximately 1,030 to 1,300 kg, depending on cab and version
- Ladder frame chassis with selectable 4x4, reduction gearbox and rear locking differential
- Wading depth of 700 mm and ground clearance of up to approximately 310 mm (Double Cab)
- Timing chain on the 2.4 and 2.8 D-4D; nationwide Toyota dealer network with extended warranty up to 10 years/200,000 km with maintenance in the brand network
What to look out for on a used example
- Check the operation of the particulate filter (DPF): examples with many short trips may have regeneration problems and fault messages; ask about the maintenance history.
- Inspect the chassis, the leaf springs and the tow bar mounting for rust and deformation, especially on vehicles that have towed a lot of heavy loads or have been used in agriculture.
- Test the engagement of 4H and 4L and the operation of the locking differential during the test drive.
- Pay attention to the registration: a grey-registration Double Cab has been converted into a 2-seater for tax purposes; converting back to 5 seats has consequences for BPM and VAT.
These points apply to the model in general. What applies to a specific vehicle depends on its maintenance history; we discuss this for every vehicle we sell.
