Volkswagen Transporter

The Volkswagen Transporter is a medium-sized van used in the Netherlands by installers, construction and maintenance companies, service providers and for passenger transport in the Kombi, Caravelle and Multivan versions. The model comes as a closed panel van with short or long wheelbase, as a double cab, as a pick-up and as a passenger version. The T6 (2015) and the updated T6.1 (2019) use the well-known 2.0 TDI four-cylinder, with front-wheel drive and optional 4MOTION four-wheel drive. Since 2024 its successor, the T7, has been based on engineering shared with the Ford Transit Custom, which besides diesel also includes a plug-in hybrid and a fully electric e-Transporter. The Multivan T7 is separate from this: it is built on the MQB passenger car platform.

T6 / T6.1 panel van (2015-2024)

The T6 replaced the T5 in 2015 with new Euro 6 diesel engines and a modified front end. In 2019 the T6.1 followed with electromechanical power steering, a new dashboard with Digital Cockpit and more driver assistance, plus a revised engine range (66-150 kW). Production ended in 2024.

T6.1 pick-up (Pritschenwagen) (2015-2024)

The pick-up with open load bed shares its cab, chassis and drivetrain with the closed panel van, but in the Netherlands it is only supplied with the three lower TDI power outputs; the 150 kW is not available in this body.

Transporter T7 panel van (2024-present)

The T7 van is a completely new model based on the engineering of the Ford Transit Custom. The load area became wider between the wheel arches (Euro pallet crossways), the heavier diesels were given an 8-speed automatic and the range was extended with the fully electric e-Transporter and, from 2026, a 2.5 eHybrid plug-in hybrid.

The Multivan is the passenger version of the same T6 body, with windows all round, movable seats and rails in the floor. In addition to the van's diesel engines, a 2.0 TSI petrol engine was also available here.

Multivan T7 (2021-present)

The Multivan T7 is based on the MQB passenger car platform and no longer has any technical relationship with the van. The range consists of petrol and diesel engines with a 7-speed DSG as standard, supplemented by a plug-in hybrid; since late 2024 that has been the 1.5 eHybrid with a larger battery pack.

What the Transporter is known for

What to look out for on a used example

The 2.0 TDI has a timing belt; Volkswagen specifies a replacement interval of around 210,000 km - ask for the service book or the invoice.
With many short trips the particulate filter (and on later versions the AdBlue system) can become clogged; look out for fault messages and for a filled AdBlue tank.
Check the sliding door rails and rollers and the closing of the rear doors; these wear at high mileages and with many daily stops.
DSG versions require periodic oil and filter changes for the transmission; ask whether this has been done and watch for jerking when pulling away.
