Compact van

Renault Kangoo

The Renault Kangoo is Renault's compact van and has been built since 1997, largely at the factory in Maubeuge (France). The second generation, the Kangoo Express II (2008-2021), was available as a standard version, as the extended Maxi and as the short Compact, with diesel and petrol engines and from 2011 as the fully electric Kangoo Z.E. Since 2021 the third generation has been based on the CMF-C platform and is longer and wider than its predecessor; the electric version is called Kangoo E-Tech Electric. The Kangoo III is also supplied as the Mercedes-Benz Citan and Nissan Townstar, which are technically comparable. In the Netherlands the Kangoo is widely used by service engineers, installers, couriers and municipal services.

Kangoo Express II (2008-2021)

Second generation based on Renault Scénic engineering, available as Kangoo Express (L1), Maxi (L2, from 2011, also as a double cab) and Compact. From 2011 also electric as the Kangoo Z.E. with a 22 kWh battery. Facelift in 2013 with a new front end and Energy dCi and TCe engines; in 2017 the Z.E. was given a 33 kWh battery and in 2019 the diesels were replaced by Blue dCi engines with SCR catalytic converter (Euro 6d-Temp).

Kangoo III / Kangoo E-Tech (2021-present)

Completely new generation on the CMF-C platform, longer and wider than the Kangoo II, available in L1 and L2 and as a double cab. The electric Kangoo E-Tech Electric (from 2022) has a 45 kWh battery (44 kWh net), a 90 kW electric motor and optional 22 kW AC and 80 kW DC charging. New options include the Easy Inside Rack and the Open Sesame sliding door without B-pillar (L1). Technically comparable with the Mercedes-Benz Citan and Nissan Townstar. Outside the Netherlands, TCe petrol engines (100 and 130 hp) are also available.

The dimensions at a glance

Of the Renault Kangoo there are 5 versions, load length 134 cm to 223 cm, load volume 2,3 m³ to 4,2 m³. The full dimensions table by version, with wheelbase, exterior dimensions, width between the wheel arches and Euro pallets, is on the dimensions page.

What the Kangoo is known for

  • Compact exterior dimensions with a load volume of approximately 3 to 4 m3 depending on length and generation
  • Long history as an electric van: Kangoo Z.E. from 2011 and Kangoo E-Tech Electric from 2021
  • Economical 1.5 dCi diesel engines (K9K), widely known to workshops and with parts readily available
  • Kangoo III with Easy Inside Rack (roof rack inside the load area) and extensive driver assistance systems
  • Kangoo III engineering shared with the Mercedes-Benz Citan and Nissan Townstar

What to look out for on a used example

  • On the 1.5 dCi diesels, check the service book for timely replacement of the timing belt and look out for particulate filter (FAP) and EGR messages, especially after many short trips; on Blue dCi engines also check the AdBlue system.
  • On a Kangoo Z.E., check whether the battery is owned or was leased (battery leasing was common on the Z.E.) and have the battery State of Health read out; this also applies to the E-Tech.
  • Check the sliding door(s), guide rails and rear door hinges for wear and the load area for racking holes and damage.
  • On the Kangoo E-Tech, check which on-board charger is fitted (11 or 22 kW AC) and whether rapid charging (80 kW DC) is built in, as this differs by version.

These points apply to the model in general. What applies to a specific vehicle depends on its maintenance history; we discuss this for every vehicle we sell.

Compare the Kangoo with another model

Only models of the same size, so the comparison is fair.
