Compact van

Volkswagen Caddy

The Volkswagen Caddy is a compact van based on the passenger car platform of the Golf family. It is mainly used by installers, service providers, parcel carriers and businesses with a small mobile stock, and comes in the standard length and the longer Maxi. Depending on the version, the payload is around 550 to 850 kg and the load volume between approximately 3.1 and 4.2 m3. The Caddy 5 (Caddy Cargo, from 2020) is based on the MQB platform and shares its engineering and electronics with the VW Group's passenger cars. In the Netherlands the Caddy has been available with 2.0 TDI diesels, 1.5 TSI petrol engines and since 2025 with a 1.5 TSI eHybrid plug-in hybrid.

Caddy 4 (Type 2K facelift) (2015-2020)

The fourth Caddy of 2015 is technically a thoroughly updated version of the Type 2K: new front and rear, a new dashboard and the EA288 diesel engines that meet Euro 6. All engines were given BlueMotion Technology with start-stop and energy recuperation. The drivetrain remained front-wheel drive, with 4MOTION four-wheel drive as an option on the heavier diesels.

The Caddy 5 moved to the MQB platform, gained a completely new interior with a digital instrument cluster and an optional large touchscreen, and a new rear axle so that a Euro pallet fits crossways between the wheel arches. The diesel engines were given two SCR catalytic converters (twin dosing) and meet Euro 6d. Since 2025, alongside the TDI and the 1.5 TSI, there has also been the Cargo eHybrid: a plug-in hybrid with a 1.5 TSI, DSG automatic and a 19.7 kWh net battery.

The dimensions at a glance

Of the Volkswagen Caddy there are 4 versions, load length 178 cm to 225 cm, load volume 3,1 m³ to 4,2 m³. The full dimensions table by version, with wheelbase, exterior dimensions, width between the wheel arches and Euro pallets, is on the dimensions page.

What the Caddy is known for

  • Car-like driving behaviour and controls thanks to the use of the Golf/MQB platform
  • Compact exterior dimensions (approximately 4.50 m; Maxi approximately 4.85 m) with a load volume of 3.1 to 4.2 m3
  • On the Caddy 5 a Euro pallet fits crossways between the wheel arches (1,230 mm)
  • Wide supply on the Dutch used market and a dense dealer and service network
  • Trailer weight up to 1,500 kg braked with the more powerful diesel engines

What to look out for on a used example

  • The 2.0 TDI has a timing belt in an oil bath; check that the prescribed replacement interval (guideline 210,000 km or 10 years, to be checked per model year in the service book) has been followed.
  • Check the operation of the sliding door(s): worn rails and rollers cause stiffness or play, especially on vans with many stops per day.
  • On diesel models, check the condition of the particulate filter and AdBlue system (the Caddy 5 has two SCR catalytic converters); many short trips lead to incomplete regeneration.
  • The DSG automatic requires periodic transmission oil changes; ask about the most recent service and watch for jerking when pulling away.

These points apply to the model in general. What applies to a specific vehicle depends on its maintenance history; we discuss this for every vehicle we sell.

Compare the Caddy with another model

Only models of the same size, so the comparison is fair.
