Mercedes-Benz Citan
The Mercedes-Benz Citan is the brand's smallest van and is intended for urban and regional distribution work. The model was developed together with Renault: the first generation (W415, 2012-2021) shares its engineering with the Renault Kangoo, the second generation (W420, from 2021) with the subsequent Kangoo generation. In the Netherlands the Citan is mainly driven by installation and maintenance companies, parcel carriers and service providers who need a compact vehicle that can be driven on a car licence with low running costs. Alongside the closed panel van there are passenger versions (Tourer) and double cab versions (Mixto on the W415). Since 2022 there has also been a fully electric eCitan.
W415 (first generation) (2012-2021)
First Citan, based on the Renault Kangoo II and built in Maubeuge. Supplied in three lengths (Compact, Long, Extra Long) plus the Mixto and Tourer. With the 2017-2019 facelift the petrol engine disappeared from the range and the diesel engines were brought up to Euro 6, with a final update around 2019-2020 to 80, 95 and 116 hp.

The dimensions at a glance
Of the Mercedes-Benz Citan there are 8 versions, load length 137 cm to 217 cm, load volume 2,4 m³ to 3,8 m³. The full dimensions table by version, with wheelbase, exterior dimensions, width between the wheel arches and Euro pallets, is on the dimensions page.
What the Citan is known for
- Compact exterior dimensions with a load floor that can take two Euro pallets one behind the other on the long versions
- Payload up to approximately 800 kg, depending on version and engine
- Diesel engines with a low stated consumption (around 4.5-5.5 l/100 km according to the manufacturer)
- Dense dealer and service network for commercial vehicles in the Netherlands
- Available from 2022 as the fully electric eCitan with a 45 kWh battery and DC charging up to 75 kW
What to look out for on a used example
- The 1.5 dCi diesel (K9K, W415) has a timing belt; depending on model year and version, the prescribed replacement interval is around 120,000-180,000 km or 6 years - ask for the invoices.
- At high mileages, check the sliding door rails and rollers and the closing of the rear doors; these wear with intensive delivery work.
- For Euro 6 diesels with a particulate filter and AdBlue, a lot of short-distance use is unfavourable; look out for regeneration messages, AdBlue consumption and fault codes in the history.
- On the electric eCitan, a charging report or battery status check (State of Health) is useful, as is the remaining term of the battery warranty.
These points apply to the model in general. What applies to a specific vehicle depends on its maintenance history; we discuss this for every vehicle we sell.
