What working height do you need?

First determine the maximum working height you need, as this is the most important choice when it comes to a bucket truck. For facade maintenance, window cleaning or installation work on buildings up to a few storeys, a working height of 12 to 16 metres is often sufficient. If you regularly work on higher buildings, lampposts or trees, opt for 18 metres or more. Always allow a margin of around 2 metres above the highest task you perform, so you're not constantly working at the limit of the range. Also pay attention to the horizontal reach (outreach) and the maximum lifting capacity of the work platform: for installation work with heavy tools or with two people in the basket, you need more load capacity than for light inspection work. When viewing the vehicle, always ask for the reach diagram of the platform, so you know exactly what the vehicle can handle in practice.

Inspection of the platform is different from the APK

In addition to the regular APK (MOT/TÜV) of the chassis, a bucket truck also requires a separate periodic inspection of the platform installation, usually annually in accordance with NEN 2585. This inspection checks the hydraulics, the safety features such as the emergency stop and dead man's switch, the stabiliser legs and the construction of the work platform itself. When buying, always ask for the most recent inspection report and the inspection sticker on the installation: without a valid inspection, you may not work with the platform, even if the vehicle itself has passed its APK (MOT/TÜV). Also check whether there are maintenance receipts from a recognised platform mechanic, and test during the viewing whether all control functions work smoothly and correctly from both the ground controls and the basket.

Platform brand and maintenance history matter a great deal

Well-known platform manufacturers for bucket trucks on vans include Wumag, Ruthmann, Versalift, Klubb and Bison. Differences between brands mainly relate to reach, ease of operation and the availability of parts and specialised mechanics in the Netherlands: preferably choose a brand for which you know local service is available, so that faults can be resolved quickly. Also ask about the build year of the platform, as this may differ from the build year of the chassis if the platform was fitted or transferred at a later date. An extensive maintenance history of both the chassis (oil, brakes, tyres) and the hydraulic installation gives the best picture of the actual condition of the vehicle.

Buying or financial leasing: what suits your business?

Financial Lease is often attractive for a bucket truck because you can put the vehicle to use immediately without paying the full purchase price at once, with financing up to 100% and a term of up to 72 months, also accessible to start-ups and self-employed professionals. This keeps your working capital free for materials and staff. If you prefer to buy outright, you become the full owner from day one and have no long-term monthly payments, which is advantageous if you continue to use the vehicle intensively over a long period. If you already have a commercial vehicle you'd like to replace, trade-in is often possible and can further reduce your entry costs. Which option suits you best mainly depends on how often you use the platform and how you want to steer your business financially in the coming years.
