What is a BE tractor unit and who is it useful for?

A BE tractor unit is a light tractor unit on a grey registration plate built to pull a semi-trailer. Where a regular panel van or box van quickly loses payload to its own weight, a tractor-trailer combination lets you move considerably more weight and volume, while still being able to drive it yourself with the right licence. That makes the BE tractor unit popular for machinery transport, vehicle transport, construction companies and landscapers. An added benefit: you can uncouple the trailer at the job site or in the warehouse, keeping the tractor unit free for other work. Many BE tractor units are based on models such as the Iveco Daily, so they drive and park like a large van.

What should you look out for with a used BE tractor unit?

First check the registration certificate: it lists the permitted maximum mass, the maximum towing weight and the axle loads that determine what you can actually transport. Then check the coupling plate; play or uneven wear indicates intensive use. Ask for the maintenance history and pay extra attention to the brakes, tyres and suspension, as a tractor unit is structurally worked at the limit of its weight. Also check the Euro emission standard: the higher it is, the more city centres with environmental zones remain accessible. At Tatev Auto, every BE tractor unit is APK (MOT/TÜV) approved and delivered ready to drive; by appointment you can inspect the tractor unit yourself at our yard in Mijdrecht.

Driving licence, towing weight and grey registration plate: how it works

With a category B licence you may drive a combination of up to 3,500 kg; with a tractor-trailer combination you will almost always exceed that and need a category BE licence. What you are actually allowed to tow is stated on the registration certificate of both the tractor unit and the trailer: the permitted maximum mass and the maximum towing weight (braked) are decisive, not what the combination is technically capable of. Because with a semi-trailer part of the weight rests on the tractor unit itself, BE combinations exist up to roughly 12 tonnes. A BE tractor unit also carries a grey registration plate, which offers business owners tax advantages, such as reclaiming VAT on business use. If you drive a combination above 3,500 kg professionally, also check the current tachograph rules applicable to your situation.

Buy a BE tractor unit or use financial lease?

Buying is advantageous if you have the liquidity: no monthly payments and the vehicle is immediately yours. Financial lease is attractive if you want to keep working capital in your business: at Tatev Auto you can finance up to 100% of the purchase amount with a term of up to 72 months, also as a start-up or sole trader. You pay a fixed monthly amount, the vehicle appears on your balance sheet, and at the end of the term you become the owner. Do you have a commercial vehicle to trade in? Trade-ins are welcome; the trade-in value reduces your investment or the amount to be financed.

Which driving licence do I need for a BE tractor unit?

With a category B licence you may drive a combination up to a total of 3,500 kg. With a BE tractor unit and semi-trailer you will almost always exceed that and need a category BE licence. If the tractor unit itself has a permitted maximum mass over 3,500 kg, it falls under category C1 or C. Always check the registration certificate of both the tractor unit and the trailer.

How much can I tow with a BE tractor unit on a grey plate?

This is determined by the registration certificate: it states the permitted maximum mass of the tractor unit and the maximum towing weight (braked). Because with a semi-trailer part of the weight rests on the tractor unit, BE combinations achieve weights not possible with a regular trailer; combinations exist up to roughly 12 tonnes. The grey plate itself says nothing about towing weight, but it does offer business owners tax advantages.

What does a used BE tractor unit cost?

Tatev Auto currently has 5 used BE tractor units in stock, starting from €14,900 excl. VAT. Stock changes regularly, so check the current range. Every tractor unit is APK (MOT/TÜV) approved and delivered ready to drive. We deliver throughout the Netherlands and export is possible.

Can I use financial lease for a BE tractor unit?

Yes. Financial lease is available up to 100% of the purchase amount, with a term of up to 72 months, also for start-ups and sole traders. You pay a fixed monthly amount and become the owner at the end of the term. Trading in your current commercial vehicle is welcome and reduces the amount to be financed.

What is the difference between a BE tractor unit and a box van?

A box van has a fixed load box on the chassis; with a BE tractor unit you couple a separate semi-trailer. A box van up to 3,500 kg can be driven with a category B licence, but that often leaves limited payload. With a BE tractor unit and a category BE licence you can transport more weight and swap or uncouple trailers. If a box van still suits your work better, take a look at our range of box vans up to 3.5 tonnes.

Can I view a BE tractor unit first?

Yes, viewings are possible by appointment Monday to Friday between 09:30 and 18:00. Our 22,000 m² stock yard is located in Mijdrecht, right on the A2 (exit 9). Book a viewing online or get in touch; you can then inspect the tractor unit at your leisure on site.
