Request a lease quoteWhat is an open flatbed the right choice for?
An open flatbed is the practical choice when you want to load and unload cargo from three sides, for example with a forklift or crane. Think of building materials, scaffolding parts, timber, machinery or green waste: cargo that is too long, too heavy or too dirty for a closed van. With folding side panels you can load pallets directly from the side, something that isn't possible with a closed body. Do bear in mind that your cargo is unprotected against weather and theft; for moisture-sensitive goods choose a tarpaulin cover or opt for a closed box van or furniture van instead. If you mainly transport loose bulk material such as sand or rubble, also consider a tipper with a hydraulically tipping bed.
Single cab, double cab or tipper?
The cab choice determines how much load length you have left. A single cab offers the longest load floor and the highest payload — ideal if you mainly transport materials. A double cab seats five to seven people and is therefore suitable for construction crews, but the flatbed becomes shorter. Not sure whether to choose an open flatbed or a tipper? A tipper has a hydraulic tipping system that lets you unload sand, soil or rubble in seconds, but that system adds weight and therefore reduces payload. If you mainly transport pallets and long materials, a fixed open flatbed is the more efficient and usually more affordable choice.
What to check when buying a used open flatbed vehicle
First check the payload on the registration certificate: the difference between the permitted maximum mass and the kerb weight. For vehicles up to 3,500 kg you can drive with a category B licence, but a heavy body or loading crane reduces the payload. Inspect the load floor and side panels for rust and cracks and test the locks and hinges. Ask about the maintenance history: commercial vehicles with an open flatbed are often used intensively in construction. Also pay attention to the emission standard if you regularly need to enter cities with a low-emission or zero-emission zone, and to the towing capacity if you tow a trailer. At Tatev Auto, all vehicles are APK (MOT/TÜV) approved and delivered ready to drive.
Buy, trade in, or financial lease?
Buying outright is attractive if you have the liquidity available: you become the owner immediately and have no monthly payments. If you'd rather keep your working capital in the business, financial lease is available up to 100% — also for start-ups and freelancers — with a term of up to 72 months. You become the economic owner immediately and pay a fixed monthly amount. Do you have a current commercial vehicle? Trade-ins are welcome; the trade-in value reduces your investment or the amount to be financed. We deliver throughout the Netherlands and export is possible.

Can I drive a commercial vehicle with an open flatbed on a category B licence?
Yes, as long as the permitted maximum mass does not exceed 3,500 kg. Most vans with an open flatbed fall within that limit. Above 3,500 kg you need a C1 or C licence. Always check the maximum mass on the vehicle's registration certificate.
What is the difference between an open flatbed and a tipper?
Both have an open load floor with side panels. A tipper additionally has a hydraulic tipping system that lets you tilt the bed to quickly unload loose material such as sand, soil or rubble. That system adds weight and cost: if you mainly transport pallets and long materials, a fixed open flatbed is sufficient.
What is the difference between an open flatbed and a box van?
A box van has a closed body (such as a furniture van), which protects the cargo from weather and theft. An open flatbed is open at the top and sides, so you can load from three sides with a forklift or crane and also carry long or dirty cargo. For building materials you usually choose open, for dry trade goods closed.
How much payload does a vehicle with an open flatbed have?
The payload is the permitted maximum mass minus the kerb weight. For vehicles up to 3,500 kg this is often in practice around 1,000 to 1,500 kg, depending on the cab and body. A double cab or loading crane reduces the payload. You'll find the exact figure on the registration certificate.
Can I lease a commercial vehicle with an open flatbed?
