Request a lease quoteFurniture box truck with or without a tail lift?
A tail lift makes loading heavy furniture, appliances and pallets considerably easier: you don't have to lift anything into the body by hand and can, if needed, manage on your own. On the other hand, the lift itself often weighs several hundred kilos, which comes straight off your payload, and a tail lift requires periodic maintenance and inspection. If you mainly transport light, manageable goods or load from a loading dock, a box truck without a tail lift is often the smarter choice: lower purchase price, less maintenance and more usable payload. If you regularly move heavy items on your own, however, a tail lift quickly pays for itself.
Payload and a category B licence at 3.5 tonnes
Most furniture box trucks are built on a chassis with a maximum authorised mass of 3,500 kg, allowing them to be driven with a category B licence. Do note that the closed body and any tail lift are relatively heavy, so in practice the net payload is often around 1,000 kg. Always check the unladen weight on the registration certificate and calculate exactly how much you can legally carry — overloading results in fines and is also dangerous. If you consistently need to carry more weight, consider a BE combination or a heavier box truck requiring a C1 or C licence.
What to check when buying a used furniture box truck
When buying a used furniture box truck, look beyond mileage and year of manufacture. Ask about the maintenance history and inspect the body yourself: signs of leakage, damaged panels, the condition of the floor, and whether the rear doors or roller shutter close smoothly. If the vehicle has a tail lift, also ask about its inspection and maintenance history. Also pay attention to the emissions standard: many inner-city low-emission zones now require at least Euro 5 or Euro 6. Finally, consider the practical interior dimensions and features, such as sufficient standing height and lashing rails to secure furniture during transport. At Tatev Auto, every box truck is APK (MOT/TÜV) approved and delivered ready to drive.
Buy or financial lease?
If you buy the furniture box truck outright, you become the owner immediately and have no monthly payments. If you'd rather keep your working capital within your business, financial lease is a logical alternative: at Tatev Auto, financing up to 100% is available with terms of up to 72 months, including for start-ups and self-employed professionals. At the end of the term, the vehicle is simply yours. Do you have an old commercial vehicle? Trade-ins are welcome and immediately reduce the amount to be purchased or financed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I trade in my current commercial vehicle?
Yes, trade-ins are welcome. Contact us with the registration number, mileage and photos for a quick indication of the trade-in value.
Can I drive a box truck with a category B licence?
Yes, as long as the maximum authorised mass does not exceed 3,500 kg. This is precisely why most furniture box trucks are built on a 3.5-tonne chassis. If the vehicle is heavier, you'll need a C1 licence (up to 7,500 kg) or a C licence. Always check the maximum mass on the registration certificate before driving.
How much payload does a 3.5-tonne box truck have?
Payload is the maximum authorised mass minus the unladen weight. Because a furniture body and any tail lift are relatively heavy, the net payload of a 3.5-tonne truck is often around 1,000 kg in practice. The exact figure varies per version and is stated on the registration certificate. If you consistently need to carry more, consider a heavier box truck or a BE combination.
Should I choose a box truck with or without a tail lift?
With a tail lift, you can load heavy furniture and pallets on your own without lifting, but the lift adds weight and reduces your payload. Without a tail lift, the truck is cheaper to buy and maintain, leaving you with more usable payload. Rule of thumb: if you often load heavy, loose items without help, choose a tail lift; for light goods or loading from a dock, a version without a lift is sufficient.
Do you also sell separate furniture bodies?
Our range consists of complete, ready-to-drive box trucks with a furniture body: currently 20 units from €10,900 excl. VAT. Can I lease a furniture box truck as a start-up or self-employed professional?
Yes. At Tatev Auto, financial lease up to 100% is available, including for start-ups and self-employed professionals, with terms of up to 72 months. This means you can start driving without a large upfront investment, and at the end of the term you own the box truck outright. Trading in your current commercial vehicle is welcome and reduces the amount to be financed.
Can I tow a trailer with a box truck?
Many box trucks are fitted with, or available with, a towbar. Two things to check: the vehicle's maximum towing capacity (see the registration certificate) and your licence category. With a category B licence, you can tow a trailer up to 750 kg behind a 3.5-tonne box truck; for a heavier trailer, you'll need a category BE licence.
