Refrigerated Van or Refrigerated Box Truck: What Suits Your Work?

A refrigerated van — a van with cooling — is agile in the city, can be driven with a category B licence, and is ideal for daily fresh deliveries to hospitality businesses, catering companies and shops. A refrigerated box truck offers a rectangular, larger loading space that efficiently fits roll containers and pallets; this is the better choice for larger volumes or fixed distribution routes. With a box truck, pay attention to the permitted maximum weight: up to 3,500 kg you can drive with a category B licence, above that you'll need a C1 or C licence. Also consider your delivery addresses: without a loading dock, a tail lift is virtually essential, while a version without a tail lift retains more payload capacity. If you work with a delivery team, a double-cab version is worth considering.

What to Look for in a Used Refrigerated Van

Assess the refrigeration unit separately from the vehicle: it has its own hour meter and its own maintenance history. Ask about the running hours, have the cooling system run as a test, and check whether the set temperature is actually reached. Inspect the insulation and door seals of the load compartment: damage costs cooling capacity and therefore fuel. A standby cooling function on 230V is handy, keeping the load compartment at temperature overnight while plugged in. If you transport perishable goods internationally, check whether a valid ATP/FRC certificate is present. Finally, compare the payload capacity on the registration certificate: due to the insulation and refrigeration unit, a refrigerated van is heavier than a standard van.

Fresh or Frozen: Temperature Range and Layout

For fresh transport — dairy, vegetables, meat, flowers — a range of 0 to +7 °C is usually sufficient. For frozen products, you need a freezer version that cools down to around -20 °C, with thicker insulation and a more powerful unit. If you transport both, consider a combination refrigerated/freezer van with multi-temperature capability and possibly a partition wall, allowing you to run two zones at different temperatures. Think ahead about which products you'll transport in the coming years: a freezer version can always handle fresh goods, but not the other way around.

Buying or Leasing a Refrigerated Van?

Buying is advantageous when you can bear the investment directly: no monthly payments and the vehicle is immediately fully yours. With Financial Lease you spread the costs: at Tatev Auto up to 100% financing is possible with a term of up to 72 months, including for start-ups and self-employed professionals. You become the economic owner immediately, so the refrigerated van appears on your balance sheet. Considering electric? More and more city centres are introducing zero-emission zones, making an electric refrigerated van a future-proof choice for urban deliveries. Trade-ins of your current commercial vehicle are welcome and reduce the amount to be financed.

Frequently asked questions

What does a koelwagen kopen cost?

The price depends on model year, mileage, configuration and body type. On this page you can see our current stock with prices; the lowest current price is from € 10.900.

Can I finance a koelwagen kopen?

Yes, at Tatev Auto financial lease is available for almost all commercial vehicles. We help you decide on term, down payment and monthly costs.

Are the vehicles available immediately?

Yes, the vehicles on this page are in our current stock. 16 vehicles available at Tatev Auto in Mijdrecht, with trade-in and ready-to-drive delivery available.

Can I trade in my current commercial vehicle?

Yes, trade-ins are welcome. Contact us with the registration number, mileage and photos for a quick indication of the trade-in value.

Can I drive a refrigerated van with a category B licence?

Yes, as long as the permitted maximum weight does not exceed 3,500 kg. Note: the insulation and refrigeration unit make a refrigerated van heavier than a standard van, resulting in lower net payload capacity. Always check the payload capacity on the registration certificate. For refrigerated vans above 3,500 kg, you'll need a C1 or C licence.

Can I lease an electric refrigerated van?

Yes. Financial Lease is available at Tatev Auto up to 100%, with a term of up to 72 months, including for start-ups and self-employed professionals. An electric refrigerated van is especially attractive if you deliver in city centres introducing zero-emission zones. Stock changes continuously; contact us for current availability.

What does a used refrigerated van cost?

At Tatev Auto, used refrigerated vans start from €10,900 excl. VAT. The price mainly depends on the year of manufacture, mileage, the running hours of the refrigeration unit, and the temperature range (fresh or frozen). There are currently 16 refrigerated vans in stock, all with a valid APK (MOT/TÜV) inspection and delivered ready to drive.

Do I need a tail lift on my refrigerated van?

That depends on your delivery addresses. If you deliver roll containers or pallets to locations without a loading dock or forklift, a tail lift is virtually essential. However, a tail lift weighs several hundred kilos and reduces payload capacity. If you mainly lift crates and boxes by hand, skipping the tail lift leaves you with more payload capacity and saves on maintenance.

What is the difference between a refrigerated van and a freezer van?

A refrigerated van keeps the load cool, usually between 0 and +7 °C — sufficient for dairy, vegetables and meat. A freezer van reaches temperatures of around -20 °C and requires thicker insulation and a more powerful unit for this. Many refrigerated/freezer vans are combination versions capable of both ranges, sometimes with a partition wall for two zones simultaneously.

Can I trade in my current commercial vehicle?

Yes, trade-ins are welcome. The trade-in value reduces the purchase amount or the amount to be financed under Financial Lease. Come by appointment (Mon-Fri 09:30-18:00) to our 22.000 m² site in Mijdrecht, directly off the A2 (exit 9); we'll appraise your vehicle and you can immediately view the refrigerated vans in stock.
