Request a lease quoteWhat should you check on a van with a glass rack?
First check the condition of the rack itself: look for corrosion on the frame, the condition of the rubber support profiles, and the clamps or straps used to secure the glass. Damaged rubbers cause glass breakage while driving and are not available as spare parts for every rack type. Also check the mounting to the body or chassis: a properly installed rack is secured at reinforced points, not just on sheet metal. Ask about the vehicle's maintenance history, check the mileage and the emissions standard — many city centres have environmental zones and now also zero-emission zones, so verify whether the van has access there. All vehicles at Tatev Auto are APK (MOT/TÜV) approved and delivered ready to drive.
Interior rack, exterior rack or open flatbed: what suits your work?
An exterior rack on the side of the van loads quickly and suits large glass sheets, but the glass is exposed to weather and the van becomes wider — bear in mind parking garages and narrow streets. An interior rack protects the glass from weather and theft, but limits the sheet size to the interior dimensions of the load compartment. For large panes and high-volume work, many glaziers choose a chassis cab with an open body and glass rack: maximum sheet size and loading from both sides. If you only transport glass occasionally, a trailer with a glass rack behind a regular company vehicle can be a cost-effective alternative.
Payload and category B licence at 3,500 kg
Glass is heavy: expect roughly 2.5 kilos per square metre per millimetre of thickness. The rack construction itself also often weighs several hundred kilos and reduces the payload. Therefore check the registration certificate for the difference between the running weight and the permitted maximum weight: that is your actual payload, including rack, tools and a passenger. If the permitted maximum weight stays at 3,500 kg or below, you can simply drive the van with a category B licence. Structurally overloading the vehicle leads to fines and extra wear — so ask for the vehicle details during the viewing and calculate this for the sheet sizes you transport daily.
Buy, trade in or financial lease?
If you buy the van outright, you become the owner immediately and have no monthly payments. If you'd rather keep your working capital in the business, financial lease at Tatev Auto is available up to 100% with a term of up to 72 months — also for start-ups and self-employed professionals. With financial lease you become the economic owner and the vehicle is placed on your balance sheet; you pay a fixed monthly amount. All prices are excl. VAT; as an entrepreneur you can usually reclaim the VAT. Do you still have a company vehicle? Trade-ins are welcome and reduce the purchase price or the amount to be financed.

What does a van with a glass rack cost?
At Tatev Auto, a van with a glass rack starts from €12,900 excl. VAT. The final price depends on the year of construction, mileage, emissions standard and the type of rack (interior, exterior or on an open flatbed). We currently have 3 glass-rack models in stock; availability changes, so ask about the current stock.
Can I drive a van with a glass rack on a category B licence?
Yes, as long as the permitted maximum weight does not exceed 3,500 kg, a category B licence is sufficient. Do watch the payload though: the rack adds weight, so the amount of glass you may legally transport is lower than for the same van without a body. Above 3,500 kg you need a category C1 or C licence.
Can I have a glass rack fitted to my current van?
Yes, this can be done at specialist body-building companies, but fitting involves extra costs and lead time. A used van with the glass rack already fitted is therefore often more cost-effective, and you can start working with it right away. Always compare both options on total price, lead time and the remaining payload after installation.
Is a chassis cab with a glass rack also available?
Chassis cabs with an open body and glass rack appear regularly in our stock; glaziers choose them for the large sheet size and loading from both sides. Since stock changes regularly, it's best to check our current listings or contact us for the availability of this type of model.
What is the difference between a glass rack on the van and a trailer with a glass rack?
A rack on the van is always with you and manoeuvres more easily in the city. A trailer with a glass rack is more flexible — you only hitch it up when transporting glass — but requires sufficient towing capacity, storage space and, depending on the weight, possibly a category BE licence. If you transport glass daily, a fixed body is usually more practical; for occasional transport a trailer may suffice.
Can I get a van with a glass rack on financial lease?
Yes. Financial lease at Tatev Auto is available up to 100% with a term of up to 72 months, also for start-ups and self-employed professionals. You pay a fixed monthly amount, become the economic owner and keep working capital free for your business. Trading in your current vehicle can reduce the amount to be financed.
