Enclosed cargo box or open cargo box: the difference

With an enclosed cargo box, your load is fully shielded behind walls, a roof, and doors: ideal protection against rain, theft, and views from the road. Think of tools, electronics, moving goods, or merchandise that needs to stay dry and out of sight. An open cargo box, such as on a pick-up or flatbed, is more convenient for dirty, elongated, or bulky material like construction materials or rubble that you load from above or with a crane, and is often lighter, allowing you to carry more within the same permitted weight. Box truck, van, or panel van: which fits your load

A van (up to 3.500 kg) is compact, maneuverable in the city, and can be driven with a B driving licence, ideal for parcels and service work. A panel van offers more load space and often a double cab with extra seats for your team. A box truck has a separate body on a chassis with a straight, square load compartment that's easier to stack than the tapering walls of a panel van, handy for pallets or boxes up to the ceiling. Heavier box trucks sometimes require a C driving licence; always check the permitted gross weight on the vehicle registration document before buying.

Tail lift or not: when do you really need one

A tail lift is essential if you regularly load heavy or tall pallets, machinery, or roll containers without a loading dock or forklift: it often safely lifts several hundred kilograms and prevents back strain. If you mainly transport light boxes, tools, or packages that you lift by hand, a vehicle without a tail lift is cheaper to purchase and maintain, lighter and therefore with more payload capacity, without hydraulics that can leak or jam. When buying a used tail lift, check the hinges, the hydraulic system, and a valid inspection certificate.

What to check when buying a used vehicle with a cargo box

First check the floor and walls for rust and moisture spots, especially at the seams and door hinges: a leaking seal is often only noticed once the load is already wet. Check the payload capacity, the difference between empty weight and permitted gross weight, against what you'll actually be transporting, and whether a tow hitch is needed for a trailer. Ask for the maintenance booklet and APK (MOT/TÜV) history, and have the doors, locks, and any tail lift tested during the viewing.
