Which DAF suits your work?

DAF builds commercial vehicles in various weight classes, from the compact LF for urban distribution to the heavier CF and XF for long distances and heavy transport. If you mainly drive within city limits or deliver over short distances, a lighter DAF with a lower payload is often sufficient and easier to manoeuvre. For transport between companies, construction sites or international haulage, a tractor unit with trailer or a heavier box truck on a DAF chassis makes more sense, due to the higher payload and driving comfort on long trips. When making your choice, always check the permitted maximum weight and the required driving licence: many models require at least a category C licence, while some lighter versions can be driven with a C1 licence.

What to check with a used DAF

With a used DAF commercial vehicle, maintenance history and mileage are at least as important as the year of manufacture. Ask for service booklets and check for signs of rust on the chassis and rear axle, especially with vehicles that have been used extensively in construction or agriculture. Check the condition of the engine via a recent inspection and ask whether the tachograph and onboard computer have been correctly calibrated; this is mandatory for vehicles over 3,500 kg. A recently performed major service or a replaced timing belt or chain is a good sign that the previous owner maintained the vehicle properly.

Driving licence, tachograph and inspection

For most DAF commercial vehicles over 3,500 kg, you need at least a category C driving licence, and for a tractor unit with trailer, a category CE licence. Drivers who drive professionally also need Code 95, the mandatory continuing training for truck drivers. Also bear in mind that vehicles over 3,500 kg must be periodically inspected and must have a tachograph that records driving and rest times. Always ask when purchasing about the validity of the inspection and whether the tachograph has been recently calibrated, so you can start using the vehicle straight away without unexpected costs later on.

Buying or financial lease for your DAF

A DAF commercial vehicle often represents a significant investment, especially with the heavier models. With financial lease, you spread the purchase over a term of up to 72 months, keeping working capital free for ongoing assignments or other investments. This is also possible for start-ups or self-employed professionals, with financing up to 100% of the purchase price. If you have an existing vehicle, it can often be traded in, which further reduces the financing amount. Ask for a no-obligation calculation before choosing between buying outright and leasing, so you can weigh the monthly costs against your expected turnover.
