Camionette, van or delivery van: the difference

The term camionette is mainly used in Belgium for what is called a van or delivery van in the Netherlands: a commercial vehicle up to 3,500 kg with an enclosed load compartment behind the cab. A van generally has no side windows in the load compartment and is intended for transporting goods; a delivery van resembles a passenger car more in bodywork but retains the load capacity. For couriers, installers and handyman businesses, a compact van is often sufficient, while companies that also transport tools and multiple colleagues tend to look at a delivery van with extra seats. First determine how much load volume and how many seats you structurally need before choosing a brand or model.

What to look out for with a used van

When buying a used camionette, first check the payload and load compartment dimensions: these should match what you transport daily, not just the price. Ask for the maintenance booklet and APK (MOT/TÜV) history, and with older vans pay specific attention to rust around the load doors, wheel arches and the floor of the load compartment, as these vehicles are used intensively. Test the doors, the lock of the load compartment and any partitions or lining. A low mileage says less than the intended use: a van that mainly did city trips is often more heavily loaded than the mileage suggests. Therefore choose a vehicle that is already delivered APK (MOT/TÜV) approved and ready to drive, so you don't end up facing unexpected repairs yourself.

3-seater van: convenient for small teams

A 3-seater van has a double passenger seat next to the driver, so you can drive to the job with a colleague at the same time without giving up load space at the rear. This is popular with installation companies, landscapers and handyman businesses that go out in twos at the same time. Do pay attention to the permitted payload: with three people on board you quickly add 200 to 250 kg extra, which reduces the load you can still take with you. Always check the combination of seats and payload on the registration certificate before choosing, and if in doubt ask about the specific version.

Buy a van or take out financial lease?

With a purchase you become the owner immediately and have no monthly obligations, which is advantageous if you want to use the camionette for a long time. If you opt for financial lease, you spread the purchase price over a term of up to 72 months and keep capital free for other investments; this is also possible up to 100% financing, including for start-ups and self-employed professionals. Lease is attractive when you use the van for business purposes and prefer to spread the costs evenly, while cash purchase often works out cheaper if you keep the vehicle for a long time.
