When buying a used van, always check the maintenance history: a van with proven service records is worth more than a comparable one without documentation. Also look at the mileage in relation to the build year, at rust around the wheel arches and sills, and at the condition of the cargo area: a damaged floor or dented walls reveal heavy use. With higher mileage, ask whether the clutch and timing belt have already been replaced. Also ask about the VAT status: as an entrepreneur, you can reclaim VAT on a VAT-qualifying vehicle, but not on a margin-scheme vehicle. Which length and height suit your work?
Vans are classified by an L-size (length) and H-size (height). A compact L1H1 is agile in the city and fits in most parking garages. An L2H2 offers standing room and is the all-rounder for installers and service technicians. Choosing L3H2 or L4H2 lets you transport long materials such as window frames, piping and sheet material without any tricks. Besides the exterior dimensions, also pay attention to the payload: the difference between the maximum permitted mass and the empty weight determines how much weight you're actually allowed to carry. If you regularly carry heavy loads, choose a version with a higher permitted weight within the 3.500 kg limit for a category B driving licence.
Three seats, double cab or minibus?
Many vans have a double passenger bench next to the driver's seat, offering three seats up front as standard: enough for most work crews. Do check the number of seats on the registration card, as versions with only two seats also exist. If you regularly need to transport more people, consider a van with a double cab, which combines five to seven seats with an enclosed cargo area. For transporting up to nine occupants, a minibus is the logical choice.
Buy a van outright or financial lease?
If you buy the van outright, you become the owner immediately and have no monthly payments, but it does put pressure on your working capital.
