When buying a used commercial vehicle, always check the maintenance history: a complete service book or digital history says more than just the mileage. Also look at the ratio between build year and mileage, the condition of the cargo area (rust, damaged flooring, signs of overloading), tyres, brakes and any warning lights on the dashboard. Also ask when the timing belt or chain was last replaced. Finally, pay attention to the emissions standard: more and more city centres are introducing low-emission zones, making a Euro 6 diesel or electric van the safest choice for urban work. Which type of commercial vehicle suits your work?
The right type depends on what you transport. A closed van is the all-rounder for installers, couriers and service technicians: tools and materials stay dry and locked away. If you transport bulky loads such as furniture or appliances, a box truck, often with a tail lift, offers more cubic metres and a flat loading floor. For food, flowers or medicines, a refrigerated vehicle with a cooled body is essential. If you work in construction or landscaping, consider an open flatbed, tipper or 4x4 pickup. And if you drive to jobs with colleagues, a double cab combining up to six or seven seats with a full cargo area is the ideal solution.
Dimensions: what do L1, L2, H1 and H2 mean?
For vans, the L-code stands for length and the H-code for roof height. A compact L1H1 is agile in the city and often still fits in a parking garage. An L2H2 is the most popular size for installers: you can stand almost fully upright and fit long materials. L3H2 and L4H2 offer maximum load length for items such as window frames, pipes or pallets. Before buying, measure your longest or tallest load and check the clearance height of your warehouse or garage. Also pay attention to the difference between payload (the weight you're allowed to carry) and load volume (cubic metres): a large van with a heavy body can sometimes carry surprisingly few kilos.

Do pay attention to the payload: this is the maximum mass minus the empty weight. A 3.5-tonne vehicle with a heavy box body may sometimes only carry around 1.000 kg. Above 3.500 kg, you need a category C1 or C licence.
