Which load capacity suits your business?

Box trucks come in various weight classes, from light 3.5-tonne versions that you can drive with a standard category B driving licence, to heavier box trucks from 7.5 tonnes upward that require a category C licence. For couriers, movers and small contractors, a 3.5-tonne box truck with a load capacity of around 1,000 to 1,500 kg is often sufficient. If you transport heavier loads or larger volumes, a box truck on a heavier chassis with a longer and taller body makes more sense. Don't just look at the total weight, but also at the interior dimensions of the load compartment: length, width and standing height determine how many pallets or boxes you can fit.

Tail lift, side door or crane: which body do you choose?

A tail lift is essential if you regularly need to load and unload heavy or bulky goods without a forklift, for example when transporting furniture or white goods. For lighter goods that you lift by hand, a box truck without a tail lift is often perfectly adequate and saves on purchase price and maintenance. A side door is useful when you regularly need to grab loose parcels or smaller items without opening the rear doors. If you work with building materials or heavy objects, a box truck with a crane can make loading easier, although this requires more maintenance and a higher purchase price.

What should you check when buying a used box truck?

First check the condition of the load compartment: corrosion on the floor, gaps in the walls and functioning door locks are crucial, especially if you transport moisture- or temperature-sensitive cargo. Always ask for the maintenance booklet and the latest APK (MOT/TÜV) inspection, and pay attention to the mileage in relation to the year of manufacture; a box truck that has mainly driven urban routes wears differently than one that has covered a lot of motorway kilometres. During a test drive, check the clutch and gearbox under load, and make sure the tail lift or side door operates smoothly and without leaks. Buy a box truck or Financial Lease?
