Licence B: what can you drive with a box truck up to 3.5 tons?

A box truck with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of up to 3,500 kg can be driven in the Netherlands with a regular licence B. So you don't need licence C or code 95, which makes this weight class attractive for sole traders and small businesses who want to be on the road quickly. Do note that as soon as you attach a trailer, the combined weight counts and a BE combination may be required. If in doubt, always check the registration certificate and your licence category before buying a box truck, so you don't face any surprises during a roadside inspection.

Watch the actual payload after the body is fitted

The 3,500 kg on the registration certificate is the permitted gross weight, not the payload. The kerb weight of the chassis, body and any tail lift is deducted from this, meaning the net payload often works out between 900 and 1,300 kg. A tail lift alone can easily cost 100 to 150 kg of payload. Always ask for the kerb weight on part 1 of the registration certificate and deduct this from the permitted maximum weight. This way you know exactly how much load you can actually carry and avoid an overloaded vehicle.

Buying or financial lease: what suits your business?

Buying a box truck outright means you become the owner immediately and pay no interest, but it does tie up a significant amount of working capital. Financial lease spreads the purchase cost over a fixed term, up to 72 months, for a fixed monthly amount. This keeps your cash flow predictable and is also possible up to 100% financing, even for start-ups or sole traders without an extensive business history. When weighing up the choice, don't just look at the monthly payment but also at how long you plan to use the vehicle and whether you want to buy it out afterwards.

Which box truck brand suits your use?

The choice between, for example, a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Fiat Ducato, Ford Transit or Renault Master depends mainly on your daily use. A Sprinter is known for a comfortable cab and strong residual value, which is favourable for later resale. A Ducato or Boxer generally offers a generous load volume for its class, while a Transit or Master is often more keenly priced in the used market. If you mainly drive in urban areas, manoeuvrability counts more heavily; for long journeys, cab comfort weighs more.
